Befesa Silvermet Iskenderun improves its facilities to protect the environment

Befesa Silvermet Iskenderun (formerly named as SYI) plant is located in southern Turkey. It processes steel dust and produces leached waelz oxide. Befesa established a joint venture and acquired the majority of the shares on September 2010. Since then, the company has increased its production and profitability significantly.

In order to improve its environmental situation at the plant area, BSI has taken many actions to prevent the occurrence of emissions and dispersion of escaped emissions into atmosphere at every stage of process from the raw material reception to the final product loading and transportation.

Among them, they have been built two storage buildings with total 5.000 t capacity to stock the stainless steel dust of electric arc furnace (EAF), which had been placed at open areas until 2009. Loading and unloading operations are also being performed in these buildings.

Also, a sealing equipment and exhaust hood system have been installed to inlet and outlet sides of the Waelz kiln, and units which may create dust leakages have been closed, as crude waelz oxide and cooling unit and pelletizing unit.

Additional 3 filters have been installed with the aim of preventing emission escapes more effectively at the Waelz kiln outlet and at the raw material preparation unit.

Aiming to increase the capacities of the Jet-pulse filters, the polyester filter bags, with air permeability of 190 lt/dm², maximum working temperature at 150°C and low durability against acid and alkali, have been changed with polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) filter bags, with air permeability of 100 lt/dm², maximum working temperature at 180°C and well durability against acid and alkali.

Finally, BSI have covered all in site roads with concrete and provided a sweeping machine to clean the roads regularly.
