Nerva (Huelva), 6 May 2010. Santiago Ortiz, General Manager of Befesa Industrial Waste Management, today expressed his satisfaction at the results of the study by the University of Huelva, which has certified that the activities of the Nerva Centre do not impair the quality of the air in the municipality. After participating in the Monitoring Committee that reports to the town council, Santiago Ortiz said that the company is extremely pleased that the report has rejected the false accusations by Ecologistas en Acción (Ecologists in Action) and he called upon the group to be more careful with its statements in future.
The General Manager pointed out that Befesa has always maintained that there are no harmful airborne emissions from its facilities. “The presentation of this exhaustive report, based on numerous measurements, once again demonstrates that the accusations were false and that the intention was to damage the image of the Nerva waste disposal site”, said Santiago Ortiz, who passed on his thanks to the team at the University of Huelva, led by Jesús de la Rosa, for the research work it carried out during the last year and a half.
In December last year Befesa expressed its confidence that the different analyses by the University would confirm that its centre in Nerva creates no negative impacts on air quality in the area since the company has always complied with every legal requirement.
The Nerva industrial waste centre holds an Integrated Environmental Licence (Autorización Ambiental Integrada; AAI), which endorses Befesa’s work and projects carried out in this municipality, including atmospheric emissions. The centre is waiting for the courts to rule on an extension to the facilities, which was contemplated in the original plan and covered by the AAI, although the town council refused to grant the licence, forcing the company to make a judicial appeal.
Finally, Befesa would like to point out that in 2007 the Provincial Court of Huelva also dismissed the claims made by various groups due to the absence of any environmental offence.
